The Fish & Wine Route takes us through the breathtaking landscape of the old commercial route which joined the inland wine-growing areas with the coast for the trade of fresh fish for wine and other produce. From La Rioja Alavesa to the coastal villages of Bizkaia we travel through the Basque Country (one of Lonely Planet's Top 10 Best, Must-see, Destinations for 2009) from south to north as we discover the changing countryside and enjoy the delicate shades of colour which are characteristic of this marvellous corner of Europe.

 

 

 

 

 

PROGRAMME:

Friday September 18th

Arrival at the hotel VILLA DE LAGUARDIA (4*) situated in La Rioja Alavesa. For those who arrive with time to spare there’ll be a ride in the surrounding area. Dinner and meeting.

Saturday September 19th

After breakfast we’ll go for a ride in the surrounding area followed by lunch and a siesta. In the afternoon we’ll visit a bodega in order to experience at first hand the production process of a good wine. We’ll also have the chance to wind down in a spa before returning to the hotel for dinner.

Sunday September 20th

Cycling excursion after breakfast. When we finish we’ll travel to Vitoria, capital of the Basque Country, for lunch in a top restaurant followed by a visit to the old part of the city. In the evening we’ll go on to our hotel in the Urdaibai Nature Reserve, HOTEL CASTILLO DE ARTEAGA (4*). Dinner.

Monday September 21st

After breakfast we’ll cycle along the Basque coast before going to Bilbao for lunch in one of the city’s finest restaurants. This will be followed by a guided tour of the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum. On the way back to the hotel, we’ll stop off to see the sunset over San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a legendary, magical setting on the coast. Dinner in the hotel.

Tuesday September 22nd

Excursion in the morning followed by a visit to a picturesque coastal village, where we’ll have lunch in a specialist fish restaurant. Return to the hotel.

Wednesday September 23rd

Breakfast and transport to the Airport.
